Selvedge Denim
What is Selvedge Denim
In the world of jeans wear, there are two types of denim, roughly speaking. There are the conventional, mass produced denim, and then there's selvedge. Unlike traditional jeans wear, selvedge is made using old-school, low-speed looms that take an immense amount of skill to operate.
Look over the shoulder of these denim masters, and you'll find they are artisans in every shape of the word. Day in, day out, they gently shuttle rolls of blue tinted cotton back and forward, across their looms, always resulting in fantastic jeans and jackets bearing the iconic self-edge that characterizes true selvedge.
Sharabati Denim use vintage Ruti machinery to craft some of our best jeans. Not just because of tradition, but because they produce the best results.
It's a narrow field of factories that pay as much attention to detail as our chosen partners.
This is denim mastery at work.
Completely Raw. Completely Different.
Some selvedge jeans come unwashed out the box. Feel them in your hands, and you'll notice how they're rougher, tougher and, well, raw, compared to the traditional jeans you might know. That's because they haven't been treated or washed - what you have is the completely raw product off the loom.
And that's a good thing. Because whilst these jeans take a few more wears to fit you perfectly, they also represent an untouched canvas. As you wear them, they will start to wear and fade, carrying the evidence of a life well lived on the pockets, knees and wherever they're used most. A true display of your life, edged into the very fabric of your denim.
Wear and Care
That's also why we don't recommend washing raw denim often. The indigo will bleed out, and you'll end up with a more generic, faded look that sort of defeats the whole point. When you do, make sure to do it in cold water and inside out to result in as little
indigo-bleed as possible. Other than that, there are no rules. Wear your denim and wear it often. The fade will pay itself back with dividends.
